the movie’s version of “a little fall of rain” works better than it does onstage because the actors could be softer and show more emotion. it really irritates me that they cut the song down. it was just so emotional and heartbreaking.

after seeing him in syfy’s neverland, i think rhys ifans would make a very good javert in a non-musical adaptation of les misérables. he’s got the right look and the acting skills necessary to pull off a sympathetic antagonist that you love one moment and hate the next.

i wish i had the intense emotional reactions to the book that other fans have. i love it very much and i’ve read it many times, but it doesn’t touch me the way it seems to touch others. other books and tales of “miserable” characters have brought me to tears, but victor hugo’s characters are too “superhuman” and archetypal for me to recognise as real people. the only characters i truly feel for are mabeuf and the two little thénardier boys.

i’ve been doing a research essay on victor hugo, and it amazes me how he based each of his characters on his real-life experiences and acquaintances, from the bishop to the thénardiers to marius’ grandfather. truly a man of inspiration.

i once saw a performance of drew sarich as javert and during the confrontation, valjean’s mouth was so close to his that it looked like they almost kissed. ever since then, i ship bread/stars but only envision drew sarich as javert.

we use photoshop cs5 to make lmc graphics…if you don’t have that on your computer then try sumopaint; it’s able to make decent confession graphics and it’s free!

but yes i think the vast, vast majority of us can agree that les mis is a fantastic novel…if you’re hesitant about the language then you might want to look for a translation by julie rose; her edition is a lot more modernized than others and it’s pretty widely available!
