i wish les mis fans wouldn’t assume that if you like les mis, you’re also a big phantom fan. the question “who is your favourite valjean?” is often followed soon after by “who is your favourite phantom?” — and then they act offended when you tell them that you’re not a “phan”!
my dad used to tell me that i could never sing in theatre because i didn’t have that kind of voice. despite that, i sang songs from les mis and phantom every week for eight months trying to imitate the singers’ tone and intonation. at the end of those eight months, i sang “on my own” for my dad. not only did he say i had improved dramatically, he also said i had the perfect voice for showtunes. i can honestly say i’m a happier person because of that.
as much as i love john owen-jones’ valjean, i honestly prefer him as the phantom.
if the timelines ran more concurrently, i would have liked to think that javert’s determination to find valjean resulted from his failure to solve the mystery of the phantom of the opera.
i made the mistake of listening to “all i ask of you” from phantom 25 while looking through screencaps of les mis’ 25th anniversary concert. i think i’ve started shipping grantaire with cosette…
i’m afraid to tell anyone i meet how enthusiastic i am about les misérables and the phantom of the opera for fear of completely turning them off and losing a potential friend.
i feel like those who think marius/éponine should have been canon and hate cosette for that reason are the same people who hate raoul because they think christine should have chosen the phantom.
i think the phantom and éponine should start a club for literary characters who have dealt with unrequited love. they could talk about their feelings, drown their sorrows in comfort food, and watch girly movies.
i don’t like it when cameron mackintosh creates a “new” version of a show when it hits its 25th anniversary. it’s unnecessary and pointless.
anthony crivello never ceases to amaze me. i first saw him as the phantom in las vegas, and his rendition of stars just moves me — possibly even more than norm lewis’ or philip quast’s renditions.
i ship éponine/the phantom.
while it would be certainly annoying, a small part of me hopes our fandom develops some crazy conspiracy theory like the phantom of the opera movie’s “secret plot” in response to the upcoming film; that would just be the funniest thing.
i hope to god that cameron mackintosh doesn’t screw up the les mis movie like andrew lloyd webber screwed up the phantom movie.
because of les mis, i checked out the phantom of the opera. however, as a result, i can no longer take the line “i dreamed that love would never die” in “i dreamed a dream” seriously anymore! it makes me giggle, thinking of the laughable mess that love never dies was — a reaction that’s definitely not the one that line should elicit.
i recently discovered phantom of the opera, and actually felt guilty for neglecting les misérables to listen to it.
