i despised anne hathaway before les mis. i rolled my eyes when i saw her in the trailer. but after i saw her performance as fantine, i have never wanted any actress to win an oscar as badly as i wanted her to. she 100% deserved it. the thing that truly convinced me to go from hating to loving her was the line “as they tear your hope apart” in i dreamed a dream. the raw, undeniable emotion and genuine torture in her voice is something i’d never seen before in any performance of the song. anne became fantine.
i love anne and hugh’s chemistry. after i watched the movie, i looked up youtube videos and i saw the one where they did a duet at the oscars and then when anne sang a version of on my own to hugh at the oscars. honestly, i find it funny that they did all this before they got cast as valjean and fantine. then i saw them at the sag awards. their chemistry is undeniable.
aside from anne hathaway, eddie redmayne, and some select others, no one in the movie held their notes out long enough or tried to be particularly loud, and i feel like it made the whole thing seem a little disjointed. i loved what they wanted to do with live singing, and it was good at most parts, but sometimes i felt like they were too afraid to make the movie what it was: a musical. they were just a little too concerned with trying to make it all real.
i wasn’t too excited about anne hathaway’s casting as fantine, but as soon as i saw the passion she had for the role, i knew that the directors and the casting agents made the best choice for the role.
after all the hype and praise she got, i thought anne hathaway was going to be a breathtaking fantine. but when i actually saw the film, she didn’t live up to those expectations. i was rather disappointed with her portrayal. i do not understand why people think her “i dreamed a dream” is so outstanding, as for me it was average; i still think ruthie henshall is the best fantine.
the movie’s version of “i dreamed a dream” is the best i have ever heard. anne’s singing is phenomenal, and the orchestration is beautiful and superior to the stage version. the film really shows what the song is meant to be.
i thought anne hathaway’s fantine was interestingly similar to sierra boggess’ fantine. however, sierra’s portrayal will always be my favourite. i’m so sad she’s left the cast.
stills like this make me think that even if only for a moment, anne hathaway truly, actually became fantine.
my dream fantine would be uma thurman with the voice of anne hathaway.
i’m trying to be open-minded about anne hathaway’s fantine, but i can’t help but dislike her a little each time i hear her make that comment about how it would be “selfish” to sing the part with advanced vocal technique. that is such a rude, unnecessary thing to say not to mention untrue. honestly, i feel like the film’s whole ad campaign is a jab at the musical production, and it annoys me greatly.
“fantine’s arrest” and “come to me” are the two songs i’m the most excited for. i think hugh and anne will do an amazing job.
the extended first look made me excited to see anne hathaway as fantine.
while listening to different versions of the finale, i suddenly became excited for anne and sam’s harmony. i think that part between fantine and éponine is very beautiful, and i can’t wait to hear the movie’s version.
seeing anne hathaway’s amazing portrayal of catwoman in ‘the dark knight rises’ made me less pessimistic about her ability to play fantine.
i think it’s good that in the movie fantine will sing “i dreamed a dream” when her hair is already gone. she has experienced more pain after going into prostitution than right after being fired from the factory.
